As a somewhat reluctant blogger, I thought I’d start at the beginning, with my first day of PhD fieldwork back in 2023. It happened to be World Water Day the day after I arrived in Santiago, and (despite being quite jetlagged) I went along to an outdoor music event in support of water justice, that had followed a march through Santiago earlier in the evening. It was incredible to hear the music and speeches, and learn the chants that I would hear time and time again throughout my fieldwork “No es sequía es saqueo” and “Las aguas robadas serán recuperadas”. Here I also met Pitu, a sociology student and water and glacier activist who has been one of the coolest people I’ve got to work with throughout my research.
(meeting up with Pitu for a completo in 2024).
